Winter Tires

Winter can present a lot of challenges for drivers on the road, but staying safe on snow and ice is easier when you have the right winter tires. Driving in harsh winter conditions can be dangerous, which is why winter tires are constructed with a type of rubber compound that is ideal for winter weather and features complex tread patterns that improve control, traction, and braking.

Buying Winter Tires

When buying winter tires, you should resolve yourself to purchasing four tires, not just two. Many people mistakenly believe that they can get by with just two front tires being switched out to winter models, but this is more dangerous than having all season tires all the way around the vehicle as mixing two all season tires with two winter tires can cause your vehicle to spin out. Make sure that all four winter tires are of the same brand, size, speed rating, load index, model, and tread pattern. Determine the size of tire that you need according to your vehicle owner’s manual. Choose a tire tread depth of at least 6/32” or greater if you are planning to drive your vehicle in conditions of snow and slush. It is always a good idea to have your winter tires mounted and balanced at the tire store instead of doing this yourself. Make sure that you check your tire pressure regularly during the winter months so that you can get the maximum performance from your winter tires. Many towns and areas have banned winter tires because of with studs because of the damage that they can cause to pavement; be sure to check your local ordinances before purchasing this type of tire. Store your regular tires in a dry area until winter is over.
