Car Tires

Purchasing new car tires can be confusing, but your purchase should be made based on the recommendations of your car’s manufacturer and the driving conditions that you typically experience on the road. The following tips will help you find the appropriate car tires that will meet the needs that you have:

  • Consider the worst possible driving conditions when making your selection. Some people will actually buy two sets of car tires, one for summer driving and one for winter driving (snow tires). If that option is not financially feasible for you, buy tires that can handle the worst conditions possible, like ice and snow, while still being optimal for summer driving.
  • Consider where you drive your car when purchasing car tires. For normal driving, nearly any type of tire will suffice. But if you are driving on congested streets or frequently during rush hour, you may require more responsive tires. Or if you frequently drive on the Interstate, you will want smooth-riding, long-wearing tires that are quiet on the road. For driving in the mountains, you want a tire that handles well.

Types of Car Tires

The most common types of car tires are passenger tires, touring tires, and high performance tires. Passenger tires are the least expensive; they have a smooth ride and long wear, and are usually all season tires that offer traction in a myriad of driving conditions. Touring tires are more expensive, have a lower profile, and provide great ride qualities including improved handling and stability. High performance car tires are rated by speed, and are usually ordered based on the vehicle’s suspension system.
